Grammar and Vocabulary (B2-C1)

This class is designed for those who want to develop an advanced knowledge of English grammar as well as develop an extensive vocabulary. The grammar and vocabulary topics will include:  

  • Review of tenses
  • Passive voice
  • Conditionals
  • Reported speech
  • Compound and complex sentences
  • Thematic vocabulary (i.e., law, art, books and literature, environment)
  • Phrasals, collocations, idiomatic expressions
  • Prefixes and suffixes

We will practice these grammatical constructions and areas of vocabulary in communicative exercises in class. Be prepared to work in the self-study center as well.

Certificate requirements: Regular attendance and homework is a must. Your grade will be based on homework you have to hand in, active participation and a final exam.

TOEFL and IELTS Preparation Course (B2-C1)

The course develops your test taking skills for the TOEFL and IELTS examination.

The primary aims of this course are: 

  • to become familiar with the format, organization, and scores of the tests
  • to learn more about the differences between the two tests, and how to register and to self-study for the tests
  • to practice the types of questions that are asked in each section
  • to develop the English language skills that are necessary to be successful on the test
  • to practice reading and the tested reading tasks, listening comprehension, addressing the speaking prompts, and responding to the writing tasks

 

Practice material will be provided in class.

Presenting in English (B2-C1)

The course "Presenting in English" is a specialized language course designed for students who want to enhance their proficiency in presenting skills in English. Various assignment formats will be used to prepare and present one's own paper/lecture, such as exercises in general science and professional vocabulary, pronunciation and linguistic confidence in the "question and answer phase", and practical presenting with (peer) feedback.  

Course Objectives:

  • analyze scientific and professional presentations linguistically and structurally.
  • structure more complex topics including sub-points, appropriate examples or justifications. 
  • incorporate visual materials (tables, graphs, presentation software).
  • present your own and other people's points of view in a comprehensible way.
  • to present own contributions clearly.
  • respond spontaneously and fluently to questions or comments from the audience. 
  • how to use AI tools for your presentations

Certificate requirements: Regular attendance and homework is a must. You are allowed to miss two sessions throughout the semester. Your grade will be based on a written assignment, group presentation and an individual presentation

Study Abroad (B2-C1)

Attention: Preference will be given to students who study for a teaching degree when registering for this course. Registration for all others is therefore subject to change. As a teaching degree student, please tick off deparment 21 (education).

Have you already been accepted into a study abroad program, have you just applied, or are you only thinking about studying abroad in the future? This class will prepare you for whatever study abroad adventure might lie ahead of you.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will have learned how to write an international CV or resume and how to compose a convincing letter of motivation. You will practice a short presentation and expressing your opinion clearly but politely in discussions or debates. You will also be able to effectively communicate on campus (in speaking and writing), be it with your academic advisors or your fellow students. Importantly, you will develop a deep understanding and respect for cultural peculiarities within different countries or regions, fostering a sense of open-mindedness and respect.

The interactive nature of the course offers students the opportunity to practice essential language and intercultural skills in preparation for the challenges that studying abroad presents:

  • Writing (Letter of motivation, CV, emails)
  • A short presentation
  • Active participation in debates/discussions
  • Intercultural role plays

Upon completion of the course, you will also obtain a DAAD Language Certificate, which may need for your study abroad application.
