Academic Writing (C1)
In the present semester, this course is offered as an online course. It consists of exercises and assignments on ILIAS with teacher feedback and guidance as well as course sessions by way of weekly web conferences. You will be given access to the ILIAS course well enough in advance before the course starts.
This course will help students to write clear and correct English in appropriate academic style. It will especially benefit students who need to write essays, term papers or theses in English. After taking this course, you will be able to
- - use academic vocabulary and grammatical constructions in a way that is precise, varied, and stylistically appropriate
- - build clear and coherent paragraphs
- - follow the conventions of academic genres (e.g. essays, term papers)
- - proofread and self-correct your own writing effectively
- - make effective use of reference tools (online dictionaries, thesauri, etc.)
We will achieve these aims by doing activities to expand your range of vocabulary and grammar. We will also clarify and apply principles of good writing (e.g. text cohesion, organisation, word choice). You will complete a written assignment and receive detailed teacher feedback. Your grade will depend on the written assignment as well as a writing test at the end of the course.
There is no course book, but students should consider purchasing one or both of these titles depending on your perceived need for self-study, perhaps beyond the course:
McCarthy, M. & O'Dell, F. (2016). Academic Vocabulary in Use. Second Edition. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. ISBN 9781107591660 (Price on German distributor website: 27.50 EUR)

Note, however, that owning the books is not required for taking the course.
