You will get access to the ILIAS course approx. one week before the course starts or the latest on the first day of the course.

Attention: Originally, the first class session on Nov 09 was intended to be held face-to-face. Given recent developments, however, this session will now also be held by way of a web conference.

This course will help you develop English language skills as needed in an academic context or in a professional context that requires accurate communication.

After successful completion of this course, you will be able to

  • - produce fluent and natural speech on a range of academic topics
  • - write clear and well-structured argumentative or explanatory pieces
  • - reliably understand the general content as well as complex details in extended, rapid speech
  • - reliably understand the general idea and complex details in academic texts
  • - have control of a range of academic vocabulary and grammatical structures

These aims will be achieved through extensive speaking practice with rich feedback as well as clarification and practice of key academic vocabulary. Grammatical structures will be reviewed, clarified and practised as need arises. We will also do a large amount of writing practice and work with authentic and advanced sources of text, audio, and video material.

Your grade will be based on home assignments (writing), a presentation and an exam at the end of the course.

Academic Writing (C1)

SWS: 2

ECTS: 3

Einstufungsergebnis: 70-100

This course will help students to write clear and correct English in appropriate academic style. It will especially benefit students who need to write essays, term papers or theses in English. After taking this course, you will be able to

  • - use academic vocabulary and grammatical constructions in a way that is precise, varied, and stylistically appropriate
  • - build clear and coherent paragraphs
  • - follow the conventions of academic genres (e.g. essays, term papers)
  • - proofread and self-correct your own writing effectively
  • - make effective use of reference tools (online dictionaries, thesauri, etc.)

We will achieve these aims by doing activities to expand your range of vocabulary and grammar. We will also clarify and apply principles of good writing (e.g. text cohesion, organisation, word choice). You will complete written assignments and receive detailed teacher feedback. Your grade will depend on the written assignments as well as a writing test at the end of the course.

Tandem Course Marburg meets Kansas - Watergate and Disco: The Seventies (C1)

SWS: 2

ECTS: 3

Einstufungsergebnis: 75-100

This course will be conducted in a unique international tandem format, which means that students will interact with a group of learners in the United States in order to improve their language and intercultural skills. Dr. Steven Foulke of Ottawa University, Kansas, will be parallel-teaching the course on his campus. Students will follow lectures and participate in discourse with their counterparts abroad using free internet teleconferencing software. In addition, students will be paired (or grouped) with their American counterparts for small group discussions and project work, with the use of a shared media blackboard. This innovative concept was awarded the Lehre@Philipps prize for 2018, which funded the first two courses in this series.

In the course, we will be looking at selections from these and other works of America popular culture to better understand developments in politics (The Pentagon Papers, The Selling of the President 1968 by Joe McGinnis, and All the Presidents's Men by Bernstein and Woodwars), and in society at large during this decade.

As the copurse is directed at students with C-level English skills, the emphasis will be on maintaining and refining existing language skills, as opposed to aquiring new skills. However, intensive interaction with American students in project work and classroom discussions, as well as exposure to a wide range of pop media in American English, will provide ample oppotunity to:

  • expand vocabulary and American idioms
  • improve pronunciation, intonation and fluency
  • become more proficient in written and oral expression
  • become aware of cultural difference and similarities
  • take an active part in conversation and workgroups with native speakers
  • critically analyze American popular culture in various media (literature, music film)

To receive a certificate, students are expected to attend online classes regularly, make weekly contributions to a written forum, to participate in a group project with their American counterparts, and to submit a term paper.

NOTE: Some coursework will be videotaped for university purposes; students will be required to sign the necessary consent form.

From 2-23 November, there will be two video sessions twice a week - Mondays and Thursday, from 30 November onwards only on session on Mondays.
