Academic English (B2) - Intensive Course

ECTS: 3

Einstufungsergebnis: 53-72

This intensive course is for students who can already communicate effectively in most everyday situations, but want to develop skills for academic contexts. The course aims to help you develop competencies at the upper B2 level for academic contexts. This means being able to:

  • interact in academic discussions without great difficulty
  • produce academic essays and summaries that are clear, coherent, and well-organised
  • understand most written materials without being completely dependent on dictionaries
  • understand speakers on typical topics in academic life

To help you develop these skills, we will

  • build your vocabulary to include most common lexis and a range of academic vocabulary
  • build your knowledge of grammar to include all common constructions that are important for academic communication

We will achieve these aims by working with appropriate written and audio/video material, doing practice activities for grammar and vocabulary, and doing a lot of production practice (mostly speaking, but also writing) with feedback. You will also work on one main assignment as part of the course. There will be a short final test at the end of the two weeks.

Students completing the course can obtain a DAAD language certificate for English at B2 level.

The course book is: Hewings, M. (2012). Cambridge Academic English. Student's Book. Upper Intermediate. Cambridge: CUP. ISBN: 978-0-521-16520-4

A limited number of copies of this book can be borrowed at the Language Center for the duration of the course.
